Pain in Breasts? It Might Not Be Breast Cancer

Often, pain in the breasts scares women into thinking they might have the dreaded ‘C’-word. However, experts say that most cases of breast pain can be attributed to several other reasons. In fact; breast cancer is rarely accompanied by pain and most sufferers only find out about it by using the tried and tested bathroom-exam conducted using one’s fingers.

So, what are the probable causes of breast pain?

  1. Hormones- Typically, women experience tender and painful breasts owing to drastic hormonal changes or imbalances.
  2. Premenstrual syndrome – Another common reason behind breast pain is premenstrual stress or PMS. Majority of women suffering from breast pain and tenderness mainly experience these symptoms a couple of days before the monthly period. The main reason behind PMS breast pain is a surge in estrogen and progesterone levels that causes water retention in the breast milk ducts. A common remedy to reduce this type of pain and tenderness is to through Evening Primrose oil supplements. Women must also drink plenty of water and cut salty and fried food from the diet, focusing on eating more fruits, vegetables and drinking green tea etc.
  3. Poor posture related pain- Did you know that some women also experience breast pain due to arthritis? Poor posture, osteoporosis and other conditions can cause pain in the rib cage as well as the breastbone. Women experiencing this type of burning pain often feel they are getting a heart attack. Taking NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can give some relief from pain. Some doctors also prescribe hot packs or cold compresses to relieve this kind of pain.
  4. Trauma- Breast trauma occurring due to a biopsy, surgery or from painful tissues and muscles surrounding the breast region can cause breast pain. In many women, such pain can even last for years. While traumatic breast pain is usually seen in women in 40s or 50s, it is experienced by pre as well as postmenopausal women.
  5. Infection-Some cases of breast pain may of a serious nature. An infection such as Mastitis can cause breast pain along with chills and fever. If this is accompanied by pus formation in the milk ducts, it is vital to see a doctor to get it drained.

Breast Pain: What can be done to counter it?

There are many ways to treat breast pain. First of all, it is best to see a doctor who can determine the exact cause of the pain. Women with very large breasts often experience pain due to the use of improper undergarments. Wearing a firm supportive bra can help relieve this kind of pain.

Hormonal or premenstrual pain can be relieved by use of certain herbal teas (chamomile, lavender), Evening Primrose oil supplements etc. It is important to cut caffeine intake and drink tons of water to. Daily exercise of 30 minutes can also help release endorphins that can alleviate the pain
